Over six generations, the restaurant has become a cornerstone of the city’s history and culture. Its warm ambiance and authentic flavors have brought family and friends together, strengthening bonds over shared plates and stories. Abortion rights advocates in the state say they have gathered enough signatures for an abortion rights amendment that would protect abortion access up until fetal viability. Conditions for viability in medical practice often depend on patient conditions, but experts agree that a fetus is likely to survive outside of the womb at between 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. The Arizona abortion law has caused significant controversy for Republicans in the Grand Canyon state as tensions related to the controversial procedure heat up during the 2024 election cycle. The slim Republican majorities in the state House and Senate have held firm for several weeks, attempting to block repeal efforts for the abortion ban.

We recommend trying the Kentucky Hot Brown, which is one of their most popular menu items. This dish comes in a hot skillet with a mound of house-brined smoked turkey that’s doused in bechamel sauce with bacon, tomatoes, Swiss cheese, toast, and an egg. They also have a list of specials which change about every two to four weeks. Their eggs benedict dish is another slam dunk, and you can choose between classic, pulled pork, or crab.
The thrill of Sugar Hill
Our vote for the best restaurant in Sugar House is Harbor Seafood and Steak. Their dishes are simple and classic while still being thoughtful and impeccable. They have their seafood flown in daily and use locally sourced meat. The menu is fairly small and well-curated, so you can’t go wrong.
Pretty Bird- Sugarhouse
You can get all the classic curries here, but our favorite dish is the Khao Soi. It’s a little spicy, a little sweet, savory, a tad tangy, and incredibly flavorful. The Dodo is an eclectic diner in Sugar House with a mural of a dodo on the wall, neon lights, and a section of the restaurant that serves as a mini sports bar.
You might as well bring friends so you can try as many flavors of pie as your heart desires at one of the best restaurants in Sugar House. We love a local, cozy diner, and even more so when the food is slightly more elevated than your normal diner fare. Hub and Spoke has classic diner offerings, like biscuits and gravy, french toast, and pancakes, but they also have a few special dishes on their menu.
We recommend the butternut squash ravioli with tomatoes, basil, and a creamy sauce, speckled with red strands of saffron. The gnocchi is another crowd-pleaser, especially if you order the sauce sampler, which allows you to try the Creamy Gorgonzola, Pesto, and Tomato Basil sauces. Also note that all the pastas, except the spaghetti, are made in-house. Ekamai Thai is one of our favorite Thai restaurants in Salt Lake City, and our favorite Thai restaurant in Sugar House.

In the early 20th century, the corner of 1100 East and 2100 South was known as "furniture row" because three furniture stores were located there. Rockwood Furniture closed its doors in 1999 and Granite Furniture closed its Sugar House location in 2004, after more than 80 years of operation. Sugar House Prison, the first Utah state prison, was located in Sugar House during the 19th century and early 20th century.

All the sides are made to order, and they are all a reminder that veggies should shine just as much as the meat. We recommend the broccolini (wilted, lightly charred, and covered in a creamy sauce) or potato gratin (golden layers of potatoes lightly crisped with bacon and shrimp to add flavor). We love Hanaya when we need a Sugar House restaurant that is fresh and full of veggies. You can choose one of their pre-made bowls, or you can build your own. We recommend starting with the Hana rice, which is made with coconut milk and green tea, making it slightly sticky and creamy.
The company, the first of its kind in the state, had been formed to provide black Californians, who were often denied policies or charged outrageous premiums, with quality life insurance. It would eventually become the largest black owned insurance company in the American West. During the 1910s and ’20s, West Adams Heights saw its status as one of the premier addresses in Los Angeles decline.
Those dishes include a variety of enchiladas, green corn tamales, fajitas and tacos. Silver Lake resident Ivan Houston says his grandfather, Norman Houston, was the first Black person to ever buy a home in West Adams, around 80 years ago. A number of prominent Black business owners, doctors, lawyers and famous actresses followed. Waters lived across the street from McDaniel, who became the anchor of Sugar Hill. Besides her intimate salon nights, McDaniel was also known for her huge Hollywood soirees, which brought black and white celebrities to Sugar Hill.
In 1963, Sugar Hill was indeed bisected by the new Santa Monica Freeway, destroying dozens of mansions owned by African Americans in the process. By 1964, almost all the old families who had called Sugar Hill home had moved away. Guests were gleefully led upstairs to the third floor, where card tables were set up and where the refreshments were plentiful.
Don’t forget to add ginger and wasabi for a sushi-esque taste and say yes to the miso on the side, or add a spam musubi for an extra salty snack. Per Noi Trattoria is a classic Italian restaurant with generous portions of creamy and cheesy pasta and other classic Italian fare right on the edge of Sugar House. This spot is equally great for a date night or a family dinner, thanks to the outdoor patio and moody light, Italian sodas with whipped cream and the extremely impressive bananas foster, served tableside right out of a flaming pan. We recommend starting with the fresh and beautiful prosciutto and melon, and the Aranchini—a large, fried round of rice and peas gently placed on a puddle of bolognese sauce.

On South Harvard, overgrown mansions—including McDaniel’s—still stand, in various states of repair. Although the traffic from the freeway is loud, if you try hard enough you can maybe hear the ghost of Waters singing, accompanied by McDaniel on her gleaming grand piano. The Sentinel’s telephone rang continuously from the moment the unanimous decision….
The white homeowners of West Adams had racist restrictions embedded into their property deeds, which banned the sale of homes in the area to Black residents. A Utah classic, Feldman’s Deli describes itself as “New York chic meets ski chalet comfort”—a vibe we can absolutely get behind. Feldman’s offers everything your deli-loving heart could desire, like Matzo Ball Soup with generously sized Matzo, Pierogies, and Kielbasa sausage. Layer upon layer of pastrami or corned beef, crowned with sauerkraut and dressing on Jewish Rye is what a great deli is all about.
His great-grandfather was an early Utah pioneer, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who emigrated from England in 1849 and settled in Utah. The Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services commission declined to grant a liquor license at its Sept. 28 meeting, citing a policy only to give licenses to businesses that are immediately ready to operate. The next DABS meeting is scheduled for Oct. 26, though commissioners left open the possibility for a special meeting before then. Salt Lake City’s about to get a new Mexican restaurant — one with a century of history behind it.
